Application of corticosteroid in ophthalmology


Abstract
General review on the application of corticosteroid in ophthalmology is stated.
Historical background of development of the various steroids from the cortisone to the recent one is introduced. Clinical application of corticosteroids consists of topical eye-drops, ointment, subconjunctival and retro bulbar injections, and systemic treatment.
Among ocular complications following the corticosteroid, cataract, glaucoma, and papilledema after pseudotumor cerebri are listed. Steroids principally are contra indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex keratitis and ocular fungal infection. Emphasis and discussion are briefly described.
